• Council OKs Qualicum Beach curling club mural

The Qualicum & District Curling Club is hoping to draw more people into the building with a mural on the exterior of the building.

Robert Jensen, communication director for the curling club, said the four-by-13 foot mural will be on the wall to the left of the curling club’s entrance off Memorial Avenue.

“The idea was when you drive down Memorial (Avenue), pedestrians and traffic would be able to see it (the mural),” said Jensen, adding the club’s hope is that the mural would highlight the entrance.

Jensen said there is some confusion about where the curling club is located.

The Qualicum & District Curling Club is located at 644 Memorial Ave., and is attached to the Qualicum Beach Community Hall.

“Everybody who comes from outside (of Qualicum Beach), asks ‘Where is the curling club?’ It’s not obvious that there’s a curling club there,” Jensen said. “One of our strategies is to become more of a curling centre for the community rather than just a club.”

Jensen said the mural will depict a person throwing a rock. However, Jensen said, the club hasn’t determined who will be painting the mural.

Qualicum Beach town council authorized the painting of a mural on the south side of the Qualicum Beach Community Hall for the Qualicum & District Curling Club at the Dec. 11 council meeting.

Jensen said the mayor suggested the curling club have something put up in conjunction with Canada 150.

“We tossed it out, we put some ideas together, we ran it through town council just to see if they would even consider it. At the last meeting, just before Christmas, we got a notice coming back saying they (council) have approved it,” said Jensen, adding club members will now work with director of planning Luke Sales going forward.
